When the Future Feels Uncertain

Discernment Counseling

Discernment counseling is for couples who are not sure. One or both partners may be thinking about divorce, but no decision has been made. This is a short process, typically one to five sessions, focused on one question: do you want to work on this relationship, or is it time to move on? It is not couples therapy. It is about getting clear.

What’s the difference between couples counseling and discernment counseling?

Couples counseling is for partners who have decided to work on the relationship. Sessions typically focus on communication, conflict patterns, trust, and intimacy. Discernment counseling is different. It is for couples where at least one person is seriously considering ending the marriage. The focus is not on fixing things but on deciding whether to try. It is short-term, typically one to five sessions, and it is not a replacement for couples therapy.

What’s the difference between discernment counseling and divorce counseling?

Discernment counseling is for couples still deciding. The goal is clarity: do you work on this, or do you move on? Divorce counseling is for people who have already made that call. It helps with the emotional side of the process, co-parenting, rebuilding your identity, and figuring out life on the other side. One helps you decide. The other helps you through it.

Is sex therapy appropriate even if I don’t have a sexual dysfunction?

Yes. Sex therapy is not just for people with a clinical diagnosis. People come to sex therapy to explore their identity, work through shame, talk openly with a partner about desire and boundaries, or simply understand themselves better. Our AASECT-certified sex therapist works with anyone looking to heal, explore, or grow, regardless of whether there is a diagnosable concern.

What is financial therapy, and how is it different from financial planning?

Financial therapy is a clinical mental health service, not financial planning or investing advice. A financial planner works on your budget and portfolio. A financial therapist works on the psychology behind your financial behavior, including money anxiety, financial trauma, couples conflict around spending, and the beliefs about money you inherited that may no longer serve you. Dr. Tom Murray, CFT, holds both clinical and financial training.
